Today is the first of the Dead Days, which the Aztecs called the Nemontemi (Empty Days) . It can be thought of almost as a kind of Lent. The ancients didn't have a fire lit, ate only cold food prepared before the Dead Days began, children born during these days were not allowed to live, and no one had sex or did anything to bring the gods' attention to themselves. Cheerful, indeed.
