Did you ever wonder why the FIRST day of Summer is called "Mid-Summer's Day?" (And the first day of winter is Midwinter's Night)? That's because having 4 seasons is a relatively new concept. There used to be only 2--summer (which lasted from the spring to the fall equinox) and winter (which lasted from the fall equinox to the spring). Therefore the Solstices were the mid-way points.
